So what is osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis is the weakness of bone structure which leads to an increased risk of fracture(s). It is diagnosed based on an estimated measure of bone mineral density.
Can I still exercise with osteoporosis?
Of course! Mechanical bone loading in the form of exercise elicits adaptive responses that increases bone mineral density. Exercise helps to improve bone composition and the strength of the bone as well as helping to prevent the risks of falls and subsequent fractures which is common in people with osteoporosis.
As bone is a dynamic tissue with the capacity to adapt to changing load requirements, exercise is widely recognised as a vital physical stimulus for the development and maintenance of optimal bone strength throughout life, Beck B.R et al (2016), JSAMS
So does that mean it is safe to exercise if I have osteoporosis?
